Hi guys, hope all is well, this is gonna be the first post from me (Megan), you will probably see a few posts like this from me as this is a topic that has been on my mind for a while now and the topic is what to do after college/sixth-form.
I have always known what I wanted to do when I finished College/Sixth-form and that was to be a nurse, it still is the one and only thing I want to do with my life. However. the process of getting into university to be a nurse is a lot more cut throat than I originally expected. My grades are high but going up against other candidates who have A's and A*s I just don't stand a chance. Another issue is to get onto a nursing degree you need masses of work experience, I was informed of this at a later time but was then also incorrectly informed that any experience you have with unwell family members also counted - how wrong were the people that told me that. So in comparison to candidates with weeks worth of hospital work experience I hold 3 days work experience on the maternity ward at my local hospital. The experience itself was great but was just not enough apparently.
So here I am, weeks before results day where everybody has either confirmed their places at university by meeting their criteria or is going through the process of clearing, sat wondering what I am going to do post 18. Do I travel? Get a full time job? Apprenticeship? I did get two interviews for two great universities however on both occasions there were obstacles that couldn't have been avoided unfortunately. (Yes, i'm looking at you broken ankle - post to come on that later!)
My back up plan is either to travel or get a full time job. Travelling has been something I've always wanted to do and I've always known the exact location I have wanted to go to, Australia. It sounds pretty typical, turn 18, take a year out and travel to Australia but anyone who knows me knows my fascination with Australia. There is just something about the country that interests me, you can live it up in Sydney or Melbourne and see the night life or you can spend your day on a beach without a care in the world and also, you can travel over to New Zealand and see what there is to offer there, what more could anyone want? (Other than Louboutins) Who wouldn't enjoy their weekend on Whitsundays or their birthday night out in central Sydney nightlife? The second option is the obvious get a full time job, who knows what i'm going to do but all I know is that I am not spending this next year or maybe two doing nothing. Whether I work in retail or in an office i'm also going to be pairing it with volunteering to help further my nursing application.
Are any of you guys currently going through the process of not knowing what to do after college? Let me know what you have planned whether it is university or something else!
